Emergency Mission Church Roof and Wall Repair Campaign Succeeds !
In spite of the pandemic, the collaborative fund-raising efforts of the Mission San Juan Bautista Parish and the Mission San Juan Bautista Preservation Fund raised the necessary funds to repair the badly leaking section of the church roof and the damaged adjacent wall. Work to replace the deteriorating roof underlayment, cracked and missing tiles, which began in June 2022 was completed in September 2022.
Here are photos of the emergency roof and wall repair work on the Mission church as it was nearing completion in August, 2022. This south-east roof and wall of the church faces the Mission cemetery. The Mission San Juan Bautista Preservation Fund’s Emergency Roof and Wall Repair Campaign, which took place during the COVID pandemic, helped raise the necessary funds. We are grateful for all the contributions we received from individuals, foundations, and companies which made this success possible.

Updated June 2022
In late April 2020, Fr. Alberto Cabrera, the Pastor, asked Architectural Resources Group, Inc. (ARG) of San Francisco, the leading west coast historic preservation firm that produced the 2013 Historic Structures Report on the Mission, to make an assessment and provide the estimated cost for the repair of the leaking section of the roof and the damaged wall. Here is a summary of ARG’s June 1, 2020 findings:
“The roof is generally in poor condition, with an active leak, missing and cracked tiles, and deteriorating underlayment. The condition of the adobe varies greatly, with some areas that are exposed in good to poor condition, while most of it is concealed by the cement plaster. The condition of the concealed adobe is likely fair to poor, especially in areas where the cement plaster is preventing the adobe from drying. The concealed areas near the leak are particularly vulnerable and should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration and potential structural issues.”
Currently, the church’s wood-framed tile roof over the northeast adobe wall facing the cemetery is leaking badly. Rainwater is weakening the wall and causing it to buckle. Thanks to the efforts of the Mission San Juan Bautista Preservation Fund and the Mission Parish, the essential funds required for the necessary repairs of the leaking section of the roof and the damaged wall were raised. This work will be accomplished in the Summer of 2022 before the next rainy season starts. Many thanks to all who have contributed to the success of the Emergency Roof and Wall Repair Project!
